Monica Oriol, chairwoman of the security and cleaning services company Seguriber, was accused of "blatant sexism" this week after she complained that if a woman has a child, "you can't get rid of her for 11 years". The mother-of-six was once praised for becoming the first woman president of Spain's top business association the Circulo de Empresarios. But her shocking speech to Spanish and Latin American business leaders in Madrid last week revealed that she is less than understanding to other women hoping to climb the career ladder. You can like this - or hate it but you gotta admit that, under current laws, it is a perfectly logical position. This Blog has long argued that the laws on employment force this kind of thinking onto non-public service employers. All Monica has done is to say what so many employers have been forced to think.
