Joel Rose of National Public Radio reports on a New Jersey proposal to
ban what many consider a “painful and barbaric” medical practice. Professionals
who’ve done it for years say it’s beginning to bother them.
“It’s “mutilation,” said one.
“It’s a matter of convenience, as opposed to anything dealing with
…physical well-being,” said another.
It “should only be done as a last resort” confessed a
third.
Now you might be thinking these doctors are talking about abortion. But
they’re vets referring to declawing cats, which one New Jersey lawmaker thinks
should to be banned.
Now, I’ve no interest in the declawing debate. But I’m struck how
unacceptable this very same language would be on NPR if it were doctors refusing
to abort unborn human children. We should of course value the well-being of
animals. But our society’s blatant disregard for human life is more than
troubling.
If we speak up for kitties but find the cat’s got our tongue when it
comes to babies, we need to rethink our priorities. John Stonestreet -
