Harold Wilson closed 253 pits as against Margaret Thatcher's 115. In fact, in the main, it was mega-leftist, Tony Benn who wielded the knife!

NOTE! It is fine if Labour closed worked out pits BUT classed as an atrocity committed against the working class if done by Conservatives.

The counter argument would be that there was still coal left in the pits closed under Margaret Thatcher - which was true BUT it would be so expensive to dig it out that it was economically unviable.
