The Commission says it may ignore national parliaments in first ever “yellow card” case.
Europaportalen reports that twelve national parliaments have objected to a European Commission proposal, “Monti I”, aimed at clarifying the relationship between free movement of workers and the right to strike. This is the first time that nine or more national parliaments have objected to a Commission proposal on subsidiarity grounds, under the “yellow card” provisions in the in the Lisbon Treaty that require the Commission to re-consider, but not automatically scrap, a proposal if one third of parliaments have reservations. However, the Commission has said that it may go ahead with the proposal anyway!Europaportalen

BBC confirms plan to move all men’s programmes to Dave

The BBC has confirmed that it no longer intends to show programmes that appeal directly to men on BBC One or BBC Two, and will transfer any show with a glimmer of masculinity straight to rival channel ‘Dave’.

I think that we may possibly assume that this piece on NewsBiscuit is a tad tongue-in-cheek. But it is the Beeb so ....

Ripoff Britain. Always Compare!

My house insurance last year was a not too unreasonable £172. This year the broker rang to ask why I had not renewed. I explained that the £60 increase meant that I would not renew. Within two minutes, I paid £5 LESS than last year for cover!
Ripoff merchants. I did say that they should make a note on the file not to try that trick again next year or otherwise I would be gone for good!

I have two interesting statistics. The first comes from The Guardian -   32.3% across all universities in the country apparently come from working class homes.
In The Mail On Sunday, we learn from the excellent Peter Hitchens that in 1965, that figure was 57%.

Hmm. Odd. I wonder what the variables are here? Well. Ah yes. Post 1965 nearly all the grammar schools had been abolished!
Think about how extensive the social damage represented by these figures has been over almost 50 years.
Call it elitist if you will, but the system delivered!

It is wonderful that we have Aldi, Lidls and assorted pound shops.

There really are a great many bargains to be had which can save you a fortune BUT ...!

If you do not hold prices in you head - it is probably not worth bothering. ALL of these kinds of shops are cheaper on many items than in major supermarkets but just take one product out of scores - possibly hundreds - at Lidls.

In Morrisons my bottle of vinegar (the first example to pop into my mind) cost me just 13p. An equivalent in Lidls was 29p - well over a 100% more expensive!

There are a great many similar in Poundland where it is all too easy to pay above the odds. Such shops bank on your carelessness.
The secret to massive savings each and every year is to hold prices in your head and to alternate shopping between types of supermarket.
The more people shop around - the lower prices have to become. CONSUMER POWER benefits us all. Careless shopping punishes us all!

Internet Porn Damages Children! (Not Really A Surprise, Is It?)

Children are being scarred for life by stumbling across internet pornography before their brains are able to cope with it, according to a leading neuroscientist.
Dr William Struthers told MPs that in eight out of ten cases, youngsters come across hard-core images by accident.

If they are between nine and 14, when their bodies are becoming sexually mature but their brains are not emotionally developed, early exposure can lead to lasting damage including withdrawn behaviour and acting out what they see onscreen.

Dr Struthers was speaking at a House of Commons seminar sponsored by Claire Perry, the Tory MP who wants to block web porn from computers unless adults ‘opt in’.

As a matter of interest,  - 'by accident'? - Sorry that bit is utter TOSH! The truth is that one child sees it and passes it onto friends and it spreads faster than a virus.
