It is absurd that we should be spending taxpayers'
money to help rescue people in the commission of an illegal act. If you are
trying illegal entry to a country where you have no entitlements and your boat
starts sinking, why is it our responsibility to rescue you? The responsibility
is entirely your own.
Firstly, the knowledge that people can be
rescued must be encouraging many more to undertake these dangerous
trips.
Secondly, would we put special provisions in place to
help drugs carriers? (Admittedly, their boats might be in better
condition!)
