Revival Wells….Killamarsh 1876

We have had two weeks of
mission services here, conducted by Mr Henry Smith, evengelist. Very many have
waited to the inquirers’ meetings, deeply convicted of sin, and earnestly
seeking the Saviour. We have decid to continue the meetings a little longer.

The first recorded meeting
of the members of the ‘free church’ at Killamarsh is reputed to have taken
place in 1842. The first chapel was built in 1852 and was later enlarged in
1877, the year when the first pastor was appointed. In spite of the additional
building works, the church was still too small for the numbers attending, so a
new church was build in High Street and opened in 1905. The former chapel was
then used for the site of the School. The church was also known as Ebenezer
Congregational Church.

The 1852 Chapel was built on
what is now number 15 High Street, number 11 was the chapel garden and Curzon
Close, the Tennis Courts at the back of the building. The property was sold in
the 1980s to finance re developing the Chapel higher up the hill at no.71 High
Street and Chapel Walk.
The picture shows the position of the 1852
Chapel, on the left of High Street, the step to the entrance can still be found
in the wall of No. 15. Inset is the
1905 building.
When re developing the 1905 chapel we discovered some news
paper cuttings which stated that shortly after its opening, there was a meeting
where 100+ accepted Christ as their Lord
and Saviour.
