'Water-muddying' by defence lawyers should be outlawed. They should face disbarment. I have too often seen deceits which are as close to outright lies as can be imagined presented with no base whatsoever in British courts. 'Over-egging puddings' must stop!
As 'officers of the court' it is not the duty of the defence 'to get their man off' - just as with the CPS, it is not their brief to 'secure a conviction at all costs.'
The truth is what matters in courts and if that is not the aim - what is the point?
