SIR – Train drivers are to receive a pay rise worth almost 15 per cent (report, August 15), following increases for doctors and teachers. Meanwhile, many pensioners are to lose their winter fuel allowance.

If, as the Chancellor keeps telling us, there is a black hole in Britain’s finances, why is the Government handing out pay rises like sweets? Either we need to stop spending so much because of our debt – or, if there is no debt, we can all have pay rises.
You can’t have it both ways – something Rachel Reeves appears not to understand.
