Genesis 9:6 (New International Version.)

6 “Whoever sheds human blood,
   by humans shall their blood be shed;
for in the image of God
   has God made mankind.

And NO! Jesus NEVER told 'society' that it had to 'turn the other cheek.' BUT he did tell that to individuals! The Lex Talionis FOR SOCIETY was never overturned by Jesus! He spoke against revenge which is personal - never retribution which is neutral.
