Lacking power.

Well. How do you decide which has been the greatest Labour fiasco when there are so many to choose from?
May I possibly suggest that the fact that this nation will have insufficient energy to run the country by about 2015 may well be fairly high on many lists?
Wind turbines are an amusing but ineffective and costly way of producing relatively tiny amounts of what we need.
EU directives have made virtually impossible any resurrection of the coal industry.
Wave power and estuarine barrages are beyond us in terms of capital costs.
We have no HEP worthy of the name.
The gas is running out and the soviets - er, sorry - the Russians are trying to hold us to ransom already.

Many standard power stations have reached the end of their shelf life.
Our ancient nuclear power stations are obsolete and dying.
Meanwhile, the French are laying back comfortably - as ever - having already done what is best for France. [No surprise there!]
They have modern, safe, nuclear power plants doing all that is needed into the distant future. They are entitled to be smug - they also have the best healthcare system in the world!
Major's government cannot escape all blame but what have these wretched socialists been doing to avoid crisis over a period of some 11 years? -
Correct. Precious little.
Our current production is around 56 gigawatts and in about six years this will have reduced by some 40%. - Worried yet?
